Elk drop their antlers every year and grow new ones. These are the shed ones, gathered by hand in Wyoming, ground smooth at the edges, washed and inspected — no additives, no colouring, no smoke flavour. Of the three antler species, elk is the softest, which makes it the sensible starting point rather than the toughest one.

Choosing The Right One

  • 📏 Size to the dog, not to the budget — small for 1-15 lb, medium for 15-35 lb, large and giant for 35 lb and up. An antler that's too small is a choking hazard — this is the one decision worth getting right.
  • 🔪 Split exposes the marrow, whole lasts longer — split antlers give the dog immediate access to the softer centre, which suits a less determined chewer. Whole antlers take far longer to get into.
  • 🌿 Naturally shed, so no animal was harmed — elk drop antlers annually. These are gathered from the ground, not taken.

Farm To Pet states antler contains protein, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, zinc, glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, collagen and marrow. No guaranteed analysis is published.

Safety, stated by Farm To Pet and worth repeating: size the antler to your dog rather than buying small to test the idea, supervise every chew, inspect regularly and replace once it wears down, splinters or breaks, and discard it before it becomes small enough to swallow. Not for puppies until the milk teeth are gone, usually after six months, and not for dogs with broken or missing teeth.

The thing no antler listing tells you: hard chews of every kind — antler, bone, hooves, nylon — are the most common cause of slab fractures in a dog's carnassial teeth. Splinter-resistance, which is what the supplier is describing, is a different question from tooth safety. FAQ

Are antlers actually safe for dogs?
It depends on the dog. They don't splinter the way cooked bone does, which is the risk most people worry about. The real risk is tooth fracture — antler is very hard, and a determined chewer can crack a carnassial on one. Supervise, size correctly, and if your dog destroys hard chews rather than gnawing at them, this isn't the right product for them.

Whole or split — which should I pick?

Can puppies have one?
Not until the milk teeth have gone, usually after six months. Puppy teeth are not built for this.

How long does one last?

Elk or reindeer?
